NEW HOME IN JAKARTA

Updated: Feb 12, 2021

Moving to a new house is never easy, let alone moving to a new place in another country during a pandemic situation. It takes a whole other level of organizing. The scare of not knowing the language, the local cultures, the people can put you in an unfamiliar situation.

Living in Jakarta can be a scary thought for foreigners just about to move to Jakarta. Still, communities are easy to find, and before you know it, you will blend in with locals. They will welcome you with open arms as Indonesians are known for their warmth and hospitality.

While looking for a house, what you need to keep in mind is how you want to live? Do you have children? Do you enjoy outdoor activities? Do you like to entertain? Do you like cooking? While having these questions in mind, you can then decide whether you would like to choose a house with a swimming pool, a big garden, or maybe both? Or perhaps you are more comfortable living in an apartment because of the comfort of the facilities. Whichever living you will choose, the next step is crucial, that is to make a home of your house.

Especially during the pandemic, you come to appreciate your house even more as you will spend more time at your home. It needs to be comfortable and cater to all your needs, making you feel at ease in these difficult times.

Expat life in Jakarta is very vibrant. They host many gatherings. If you have children, you will be connected automatically with other families with similar situations. Soon there will be playdates, and your house will be filled with guests all the time. It's not likely that you will be meeting friends and family in public spaces during the pandemic. Making sure your house is comfortable for you and your guests has become essential.

The definition of a comfortable living space is different in every family; while dining together is vital for some, it can be less critical for others. That's why before creating the area, you must evaluate the needs how you will want to live there.

Conscious design choices around where to put your dining table are a great example of understanding what you need to do. Will you place it in the kitchen area? Or perhaps on the outdoor terrace so you can enjoy calm, outside evenings with friends and family? Or maybe even create a separate dining room? What will your family's focal point be?

Not less important is the living room, what kind of activities do you envision there? Do you mostly watch tv together? Or are you consciously staying away from digital distractions while winding up after a busy day? Or do you need a cozy corner to read? Or a big comfortable sofa just to lay down after a tiring day at the office? A big open space where living, dining, and playing are all intertwined is comfortable for one family but not others. If you are lucky, you have a house big enough to set up an extra playing room for the children.

What is also essential nowadays is the study room, whether it's a home office for Work from Home or maybe a study desk for your child during online school. You will need to think about the lighting and the furniture ergonomics, for example, to cope with the long hours spent in those areas.

Utilizing these tips can be a starting point to make you feel immediately at home in your new house.
